Calspan Crash Test Facility Special Inspections

Project Objective

Calspan Corp. constructed a new 58,000 square foot, $20 million crash test facility on its grounds in Western New York.  The state-of-the-art facility will allow Calspan to run approximately 500 crash tests per year using a tow-cable system.

Unique Project Features

The impact wall in the facility must withstand crashes at speeds ups to 75 mph.  The wall extends 12 feet below the floor and required 15,000 bags of concrete to construct.

Engineering staff performed materials special inspections during the construction phase of the facility, including soils, concrete, and structural steel, as well as Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) inspections.
