Project Objective

This project’s objective was to evaluate the existing hydrogen fuel cell lab space at Alfred State College and determine code requirements necessary to bring the space into code compliance for the work performed.

Encorus Group Solution

Encorus performed a site visit to evaluate the current construction of the existing space. Requirements from NFPA codes, NYS Building Code, and electrical codes were evaluated against the proposed use of the space. After evaluation, it was determined that constructing a new structure would be more cost effective than retrofitting the existing space due to safety requirements when utilizing hydrogen gas.

Project Objective

The purpose of the project was to perform a structural investigation and engineering evaluation of the furnace #1 exhaust stack in order to render an engineering opinion regarding its capacity to support a 10-foot-long extension to the top of the existing stack and its associated loading. The scope of the evaluation included performing on-site investigations, laboratory testing, review of available information and subsequent evaluations.

The existing stack required a thorough investigation to determine its capacity to support the stack extension.

Encorus staff performed an on-site investigation to assess the structure, obtain and test material samples, review of available information, and made recommendations for repair.  A report was issued to the client.

Project Objective

The client requested a structural engineering evaluation in order to assess the structural integrity and extent of deterioration to the batch tower building roof slab.

Unique Project Features

The batch tower building is six stories tall with access to a roof level. The building walls, floor slabs, and roof slab are constructed with reinforced concrete. The roof level and distributing floor level supports sorting and conveying equipment used in the glass making process.

Project Objective

Encorus was contracted to design steel shoring for the front and rear walls of this crumbling building in Springville’s downtown historic district in order to stabilize the structure while it was being renovated. The non-profit organization that owns the building plans to turn it into a coffee shop, artists’ residency space, performance space, and fine crafts area.

Unique Project Features

Abandoned for many years, the roof had collapsed into the basement prior to its acquisition by the Springville Center for the Arts. Immediate action was required to stabilize the structure while the interior was renovated. The structure shares walls with two adjacent buildings, and is contiguous to the sidewalk of a heavily-trafficked downtown area, presenting unique challenges. In addition, asbestos was present in the structure, presenting an additional hazard and necessitating abatement measures.

Encorus Group Solution

Taking into account the proximity issues, building codes, and other factors, Encorus designed the shoring to be installed on the building prior to any demolition and construction on the structure. The shoring served to replace the lateral support provided by the diaphragm structure of the floor while the interior was rebuilt.

Project Objective

The objective of this project was to develop drawings and specifications for a new addressable campus-wide fire alarm system with voice notification.

Unique Project Features

The campus is approximately 600,000 square feet and included 30 buildings.

Encorus Group Solution

It was found that 20 of the 30 buildings were in need of a fire alarm design and smoke and fire barrier identification. Encorus worked in conjunction with VAMC staff to determine the most efficient fire alarm design configuration and develop a complete design package for use in construction, including as-built drawings and documentation.
